Is Beach Volleyball a sport?

I was browsing beach volleyball pics on flickr, and started to wonder if it is a sport or not? Or maybe to put it more accurately: do spectators come to watch a sport competition or swim suit beauty contest? Undoubtly, the volleyballists are serious athletes, but I'm not sure about the audience anymore :)
