Judge Rejects Teacher's Plea in Sex Case

A judge has rejected a plea deal in which a former teacher would have avoided prison time for having sex with a 14-year-old student, prosecutors said.

Under an agreement reached last month, Debra Lafave, 25, would have been sentenced to three years of house arrest and seven years' probation after pleading guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery. Had she been convicted of the charges at trial, she could have been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

I think that 30 years is way too much for this case. I'm not even sure it should be considered a real rape. A boy didn't mind. Who would? She looks pretty, imho.
I saw her footage during court procedures today, and she was prettier than on this photo. There's something wrong with her, that's for sure. She should be punished, at least for her stupidity, but not jail time, imho. She knew it's illegal, she works with children, and had to know that there's no way to keep it secret. Boys would share this with friends, it's obvious. Maybe subconsciously she wanted to get into trouble. I saw this kind of behaviour in different circumstances.

I had a colleague at one of my consulting gigs. He was a full time employee. Ok, you wouldn't expect him to work long hours, but some reasonable effort to show appearance of work is expected, imho. This guy would simply ask as much time as he can negotiate for any simplest task. After that he'd spend all days chatting, browsing and generally doing anything but work. He;d start working on his tasks in the last minute. And you know what happens when you do this in IT. Yes, something bad happens. Server's down, source control is screwed, computer is infected.... Exactly, he'd screw up task after task every single time. He was warned by his boss, but it didn't make him change his ways. The only logical conclusion is that he subconsciously wanted to get into trouble. Maybe he didn't like his job, but couldn't quit on his own, so he wanted to be booted out.

Her ex-husband is arguing for hard time.

"I think a year to two years of jail time in conjunction with some intense psychiatric help," said Owen Lafave.

What a loser. Surely, aybody would be upset in this situation, but he acts like a big time loser.

Debra Lafave, former middle school teacher charged with having sex with a student, leaves the Hillsborough County Courthouse after pleading guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery, Tampa, Florida, Nov. 22, 2005.
